Williamsport, PA  – Those experiencing the post-summer blues will have two opportunities to enjoy the city’s Splash Cove Pool at Memorial Park before it closes for the season as the Lycoming County SPCA, City of Williamsport and Media Sponsor iHeartMEDIA present Maggie’s Dog Swim on Thursday, September 7th and Saturday the 9th. Also on Saturday the SPCA will hold its 12th Annual Pet Expo from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the park next to the pool.

The pool preview night on Thursday is a great opportunity to introduce dogs to the park and pool. The handicapped accessible pool features railings and a ramp perfect for walking dogs into the pool for the first time. A $10 donation is requested for Thursday, or $15 to attend both dog swim dates. In addition to Maggie’s Dog Swim on Saturday, a variety of dog water sports will be explained and demonstrated throughout the day. Following each demonstration, dogs will have an opportunity to try activities from dock diving and kayaking to stand up paddle boarding with their humans! Water safety information will be shared with guests, and a water retrieval toy will be given to the first 100 dogs in honor of Maggie; for whom the dog swim event is named.

The SPCA’s Pet Expo is being held simultaneous to Maggie’s Dog Swim on Saturday in an area adjoining the pool complex at Memorial Park. The expo is free and brings together animal enthusiasts, rescues and vendors with the community to celebrate our shared love of animals. Staples of the event that are returning include pony rides, therapy animals from Young’s Funny Farm, kids’ games and a bounce house, “Just for Fun – Pet Olympics”, a Chinese Auction and FREE ice cream for dogs from Brusters Ice Cream. The expo will also feature demonstrations by Sit Happens, and the South Williamsport Police K9 Dany, “the dog rocket”. New demonstrations will be offered by PetSmart trainers and an unlikely scent detection demonstration by Clinton County K9 Search and Rescue Team, Kristen Hunter-Siple and Tank. Unlikely – because Tank is not your typical search and rescue dog. He is a four-year-old, 170 pound English Mastiff. And he’s no newbie. He began training for search and rescue when he was four months old and has already been on a dozen searches for everything from missing children and hikers to Alzheimer’s patients. Tank’s story and others will educate and entertain animal lovers of all ages. While at the Pet Expo, enjoy food from a variety of food truck vendors at the park. For more information about animal water safety, the Pet Expo or Maggie’s Dog Swim, visit www.lycomingspca.org or call 570-322-4646. The rain date for the September 9th event is Sunday, September 10th.

Dogs will enjoy a free sundae compliments of Bruster’s!

Pet therapy animals of all shapes and sizes from ducks to donkeys from Young’s Funny Farm of Berwick.

Kristin Hunter-Siple and Tank from the Clinton County K9 Search and Rescue will demonstrate a scent search demonstration.

Maggie’s Dog Swim in named for Maggie who passed away from water intoxication last summer.
